Among all the SDGs of the UN 2030 Agenda, SDG 4 ” Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all (…) ” appealed to a group of NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO who committed to contribute to the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11 th, 2018, with the support of the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, the UNESCO Education sector and Gender Equality Division.
Testimonies were collected by these NGOs within their national branches, all of them showing that the time has come to make it a priority to tackle the major challenges girls still face today to go to school and stay in school (if they ever had the chance to be in school in the first place) , and whose dramatic impact decision-makers often underestimate : sexual harassment or rape on their way to school, forced or early marriage and pregnancy, domestic chores, lack of separate toilets or water among others.
How will they have access to quality education in 2030 if urgent action is not taken?
A declaration will be made in order to mobilize our local and regional NGOs on this critical issue for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.
We thus invite you to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child 2018 with us at UNESCO Headquarters.
Practical information will be shortly available.
