Information on the forum organization

According to the UN definition (1998, Resolution A/52/13), the Culture of Peace is a set of values, attitudes and behaviors that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups and States.

The Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace from the United Nations identified several areas of action for actors at local, national and international level, including civil society (NGOs).

Each NGO, whether by plea or by action, built its part of the desired peace. Essentially around all forms of education, intercultural dialogue and the ideal represented by human rights.

It seems therefore important to value the contribution of NGOs in building this peace.

Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is rather in this spirit: “Promoting the advent of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development

To be sustainable, peace must be built on mutual understanding among peoples and intellectual solidarity of humankind. But, this also proves that every human being carries infinite resources of tolerance and dignity to be devoted to fulfill this ideal.

The Forum

In accordance with the Directives concerning UNESCO’s partnership with NGOs, adopted by the General Conference in 2011, the Forum is organized by the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee in close cooperation with the UNESCO Secretariat, and with the active participation of NGO partners of UNESCO.

It will be addressed primarily to NGOs in official partnership with the Organization, but is also open to the participation of other NGOs and institutions, and representatives of Member States.

During two days of discussions and workshops, the Forum intends to multiply our efforts to develop a culture of peace together and at all levels, one of the main challenges being to

foster a better dialogue, understanding and sharing with and between different cultures and civilizations.

The Forum is also expected to highlight meaningful experiences of promoting and building peace by NGOs.

Thus, we will be able, after this forum, to create a broad alliance of existing NGOs movements federating all those who are already working for this culture of peace.

An Internet discussion platform concerning the organization of the International Forum of NGOs on the theme of peace allowed NGO representatives to participate in the ‘online discussions’ on one or several themes proposed and to give his/her views, responding to other messages, feeding reflection.

This Platform for discussion and exchange on the Internet collected points of view of different NGOs worldwide.

The Discussion Platform has been online from December to April.
